Will automakers ever stop it by design?

 

Will automakers ever stop the physics of turbulent airflow under a pressure differential? How exactly would you suggest they do that?

 

A silly solution to a non-existent "problem" that's already solved by closing windows and using the air conditioner.

If something like this device became standard equipment (highly unlikely), Physics teachers the World over would lament the loss of one of our best "do this tonight" real-world demonstrations of an audio VLF resonance cavity.

 

As the Toyota engineer clearly explains in the video which you didn't watch, they don't test vehicles for this. The video also explains why they are used. Since you've never been to a race track you wouldn't understand, rolling up the windows isn't a solution.

 

For me personally, the best way to stop the buffeting noise from your rear window is to crack open the front window in front of it. I don’t get much noise except the usual wind noise. I actually prefer to drive with my windows open on most days. If the temps are excessive, then I will keep windows closed and use the AC. On many days when it’s nice out and I want just a bit of a breeze, I crack open the front and rear windows on the passenger side and I get a breeze that circles around to the driver side. I do this a lot when I’m on the highway to limit noise and enjoy the fresh air and audio system.

 

Agreed, opening combinations of windows at varying amounts can reduce noise significantly.

I avoid using the A/C to maximize range 😝 I regularly drive 154 miles in an evening and don’t want to have to crawl along at 65 mph …

 

Opening the windows at different levels is what I've always done, I think I called it tuning out the noise in the first post.

I've read that at higher speeds running the A/C can save fuel over having the windows down. I wonder how that works out for the Bolt?

Running higher speeds, these things probably aren't doing you any favors.

 

I ran the A/C for a few highway miles and did not like how quickly my range was dropping. Looked at the energy screen and it showed it was using 4% but it felt like more (probably because I had to drive a few miles to get from home to the highway where I turned it on, so maybe it consumed more like 8%) so I turned it off. I will need to run some more tests 🤓

 

My experience has been the opposite. AC seems more efficient to me - at least after the car has cooled down. The initial energy usage is considerably higher than later.
