beware low ground clearance, don't do what I did

In Pittsburgh they use low concrete barriers about the height, maybe a bit less, of a curb. I wanted to make a U turn in my Bolt and thought that since the front of the car cleared the barrier I could get over it. No.

Once the front wheels were over I grounded on the concrete with the battery undercarriage making a scraping sound. Fortunately it was not enough to keep me from getting off of the barrier but, needless to say, the last place a EV owner wants to incur damage is the battery. Apparently no damage was done, but I can't say for sure.

Sometimes when an idiot speaks, as in this case, you should listen!

I banged my 2019 pretty good on a speed bump once. There's an art to judging how fast to go over speed bumps of certain sizes. The safe was is to crawl over them but if you don't want to do that and hold up traffic, sometimes it's better to hit them fast than slow where the weight can unload right over the battery.

Since the literal reason for speed bumps is to "hold up traffic", I wouldn't be the least concerned.
Yes, for you holding up traffic isn't a concern, it's a goal. :rolleyes:

I think the ground clearance in the Bolt is deceiving because it sits rather high but does not have the ground clearance to match. I'm much more conscious of ground clearance with the Model 3 because of how low I sit. But the clearance is almost the same as the Bolt.

Did not scrape the battery area, but did drop the left front tire off a low curb. I had stopped on a quiet residential sidewalk, parallel to the traffic lane. When departing I needed to back up and move the front end to the left, but I turned too much and that corner dropped onto the street and dragged on the curb for only a short distance. Was concerned about suspension parts contacting the curb, but the contact was further in-board and onto some plastic shield pieces, forward of the battery. No damage, just cosmetic on the unseen plastic bits. Will not do that again!

I drove over a parking bumper once. The rest of the spots in the parking lot didn't have bumpers and I forgot that the spots at the end of the row did. I was heading home and the spot in front of me was empty. When the car initially didn't move I gave it a little more throttle. The torquey electric motor happily climbed right over and then fell off the other side. Something hit on the other side and I panicked about my battery but thankfully I was further forward.
Apparently a co-worker made the same mistake in his new rear engine Corvette!!!

This thread is why I love the over-sized tires that I have used on our 3 Hyundai Elantras. My 2013 Elantra has over-sized tires that have lifted ground clearance from 5.3 inches to 6 inches. Since I drive slowly & do not load cars to weight capacity, the over-sized tires have given superior performance for 130,000+ miles. Several places on this website, people have switched from OE 215x50x17 inch tires to 215x55x17 inch tires, will give 0.4 inch greater ground clearance, with only slight scraping at full turn lock. Bolt will be nicer to drive on highways & freeways, too.
