Yep. Don't need it and it makes it more versatile. I left my neutral blade off the adapter that I had made.

 

If you haven't clipped it yet, it's a lot easier to fit appropriately sized wiring for a 15A EVSE in something like this: 275-E - 30/50 Amp Grounding Angle Plug in Black - Leviton , And you can just leave the neutral terminal completely out.

 

Perfectly fine. Perfectly normal to have 240V on a 120V outlet.

Proper L2's are SO expensive, like $200.

 

I live in an old house and do not have sufficient capacity, or breaker space, to install an L2 charger. Reusing an existing 240v baseboard heater circuit to power the OEM 120v charger has literally doubled the charge rate for me. It's been in use now for about a year and a half, no problems and yep, makes a lot of sense. Way better than a $3,000 electrical heavy-up!

Normally, upgrading your home's electrical system would be considered a long term infrastructure investment, while buying a car would be considered the (relatively) short term cost. Strange how when it comes to adding a 240V outlet and EVSE, people often treat them the opposite way - be willing to spend a lot on the car, but balk at a relatively small investment in the home.

Put another way, if you think of charging an EV at home as a lifestyle change rather than something you'll only do for this one particular car, it might be worth spending a few hundred extra dollars setting up a 240V outlet. It will likely outlast your Bolt and be useful for any other EV in the future.
