the software patch.
I hate patches... just do it right, do it once. Constant updates and patches...
each time it implies that the previous version could have been unstable or improper in any capacity.
I hope they do not have to constantly update the welding robot or wheel balancer...

Anything that runs on software gets software updates on a pretty regular basis. Just had one for my phone over the weekend. Given that cars are becoming more and more software based by the day, you might want to get used to your car getting software updates.

Phone, computer... OK, those I get as there are tons of folks who design viruses, Trojan horses, or whatever warms to infect your phone and steal your data.

But a car?
It only tells me whoever worked on it, did not do the right job testing it.
Software (code) was in the cars since early 70's if not even before. It was basic, sure, but computers were there. Updates were not normal to happen.
Now - it seems like everyone is expecting an update every few weeks.

The amount of code that goes into cars today is enormous. Cars are full of control modules, and each module is essentially a computer. Only six years ago, about 15% of recalls were software related. Today, I would guess it is more like half. And that is not a GM thing. That is an every single automaker thing.

I assume you have read Joseph Tainter's Collapse of Complex Societies?

Are we sure it's a software bug?
It never existed on a Bolt before the latest patch. What do you imagine it is? GM said, "Hey! We have never added a feature to the Bolt in 5 years. Let's. just give them a charge port lock, which may prevent them from getting the J1772 plug in, or out....at random."

But I did not see it activate like... at all.
When shall it be active then? What option in the menu it is? I could not find one. And I looked.

Same issue in my 2019 and I thought it was my home charger...but now I see it isn't. I actually grinded my home charger latch so it now engages. But clearly the latch is down.

I have had a new HV propulsion battery replacement also.

Had anyone had success with their dealer fixing this?

I did not try yet.
I am thinking of simply disconnecting it completely. Not sure if that could cause another problem, though.
I am hesitant with my dealer as the service advisor is very... well... inattentive.

As I said - I pushed mine in.
Never ever had this problem before. I charged DC maybe 3 times in my 2 years of ownership, no problems there.
Since I picked it up after the battery replacement, the very first time I plugged in I could feel weird resistance. The next two times OK, until last night.

So, basically now I know the solution and I will go with it for the time being. I will just carry small flat blade. Simple.

You see, the problem is that the dealer must DUPLICATE the problem. If one cannot predict it, how they can duplicate? Pointless trip.

I had my battery replacement done in early December and charge L2 daily and this just occurred in the last week.

I will advise if the 12v disconnect works, but jeesh what makes this happen weeks after the software was installed?

It only activates when plugged into a DC fast charger...never on AC. There is no option. It is programmed into the car, and somehow the new patch has caused the car to do it at random.
The bolded part would be a bummer. FWIW, my '19 pack's not been changed yet (but I was flipped to 881 on 12/3/21) but I've had the 883 80% limiter temp patch installed since 12/1/21.

I've both DC FCed a ton during EA's free juice periods and during my road trip between Nor Cal and So Cal and otherwise have J1772 L2 charged a whole bunch and not had any trouble w/the latch, esp. w/it blocking J1772 handle insertion nor locking the J1772 handle for AC charging.

And yes, Bolt has never had any sort of J1772 (for AC charging) handle lock, only DC charging. Besides my Bolt, I've had experience with unplugging and plugging in ones at work before COVID. (It is fair game at my work to unplug cars that are done and plug in waiting ones. I + others used to do sweeps to get cars going.)

However, if all goes according to plan, I will no longer have my Bolt on 1/28/22. It's being turned in for buyback.

Same issue AFTER getting propulsion battery recall finished. I grinded down my charger before seeing this thread. I’ll try the other issues but Chevrolet needs to see this as an issue. How do we let Chevy know about this problem that seems to be happening everywhere AFTER the recall?

Hi Boltemort,

Good and bad news... our 2019 pre-recall-fix is having the same issue. It seems to have started since the software update that limited charging for safety.

Bad news, no one seems to know anything about it or if there is a fix or if it is a hardware or software failure.
Good news, I have a workaround that works, but is rather a PITA.

You are right that the issue isn't the latch itself, but the locking pin behind the latch. The pin should lock the latch in place during charging to prevent inadvertent disconnects, but for some reason it decides randomly every couple of days to lock when there is nothing plugged in, thus preventing the cable from being fully seated.

We've tried every possible easy solution under the sun to get it to unlock, but we've found only one PITA solution that works... pulling the 12v, waiting a minute or two, and reconnecting it. Fixes it every time, and is a complete and total pain... good reason to make sure you have a 10mm in your car at all times.

Good luck!
