Isn’t there now a subscription needed? Or did I cross wires?
I did a search and did not find anything about a subscription fee for Comma.AI today. Looks like it was subscription based in 2016 when it was $999 + $24/mo subscription fee.

I also found an article talking about when Comma.AI 2 was only $999 and the earlier Eon that ran on a OnePlus. Would be great if we can get a scaled down version of OpenPilot that just does lane centering (I can use the ACC for throttle control) that we run on an android phone... that's all I really want.

I’ve been taking a hard look at this (multiple YouTube videos, the sub Reddit, and the Discord) and can’t yet convince myself, even though I would love the near perfect lane centering. It sounds like your insurance carrier revoking your coverage could be a variable, and I don’t see how this can possibly pass muster with laws about devices mounted on the windshield clearly in the line of vision. I think there are less than 10k in use, so maybe they’re flying under the radar?

I’ve not looked hard enough, but insurance can revoke coverage?

I don't know if I believe that. I think there was a Reddior I saw who represented communication from State Farm, an insurance company:
As I had shared with you during our call yesterday, at the present time, adding the OpenPilot system to your vehicle will not have an impact on the rate that State Farm charges for your insurance. Similarly, the use of driver assist technology will not impact coverage provided by your insurance as long as the driver of the vehicle adheres to all laws, codes, and requirements for operating a motor vehicle on public roads.
Finally, driver assist technology is a newer technology that the insurance industry is following very closely. As the technology continues to develop, it is possible at some point in the future that State Farm and other insurance companies may choose to adjust pricing and coverage to account for the use of driver assist technology.
I don't have any concerns with Comma AI and OpenPilot. I don't rely on any ADAS to drive for me. It's a driving assistant, and the driver should still be in control. Comma, SuperCruise, BlueCruise, Full Self Drive, AutoPilot, etc. are all Level 2 systems, and the driver must be in full control.

The only Level 3 system out there is Mercedes Benz MB Drive Pilot, which only received authorization to be sold in Nevada and California (the latter as of a few days ago). Benz has already said it will assume full liability.

COMMA THREE See 360° with 3 cameras on our beautiful new hardware. Introducing the comma three devkit. The comma three is 4th generation custom hardware designed to live in your car. It has dual cam 360° vision, plus a narrow cam to spot objects far off in the distance. The three 1080p cameras have 120 dB of dynamic range, two generations ahead of a leading electric car maker. It's as connected as a cell phone, with WiFi, LTE, and way better high precision GPS. Starting at $2199. Your 2019 Chevrolet Bolt EV is not yet supported by the comma two and the comma three. However, the comma system is open source and you can manually add support yourself. Compatibility and harness selection based on the US car market. Boo!
I regret not knowing about comma AI and not getting the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) despite thr safety package . I wish they had an option to add it aftermarket

The site states this but there are available forks of openpilot that works without ACC (they call it ******* ACC). It does not work under 24 mph without a pedal interceptor but anything else above that, it does work just by spamming the traditional cruise control commands to speed up or slow down. If you understand the nuances and if it works for you, it might be an option.

See
in action on Bolts without ACC.

I've been seriously thinking about getting this. Both my wife (DAV) and I are disabled, her more than me. This plus the lower body exoskeletons we're getting in June could keep us going a while longer.

New version 3X with 128GB for $1250!
REGULAR: $1250
SALE: $1050 with purchase of a car harness ($200)
I saw that too and was tempted since a Pacifica PHEV is an 80% probability in my future and it's compatible. Also, an unspecified EV is 50% likely in my future as well, and I would want the capability added to that vehicle as well.

But then, I figured you buy technology when you need it, because it always gets better and reduces in price over time.
