Delayed Charge / Utility Rate Charging Dilemma

I just got a 2023 Bolt EUV. I have finally figured out (sort of) the (very unnecessarily complicated) charging options. But one thing that completely escapes my comprehension is that, when I turn OFF delayed charge, then utility rate charging (which is what I want to use) is immediately disabled. Is it supposed to do that or do I already have a defect? It doesn't even make since I have the utility rate charging set to off peak only. So why would I want to also use delayed charge? Can anyone enlighten me or otherwise shed some light on this?

Kind of.
You have the option of waiting until you are in off peak rates to charge. You also have the option of delaying the charge so the car reaches 100% just prior to departure.
In my case off peak is 7pm to 7am and my departure time is set to 4am.....the car does the math and works the start time backwards so that the desired charge will be reached by 4am but in any case would not start charging before 7pm.
I will have to go check my EUV again now to be sure but I was pretty sure you could use delay charge without utility rate charge.

I have a '23 as well and have fiddled with the various charging options over time. My take is you are either going to charge immediately when you plug it in, or you are going to delay charging based on other settings. So in order to charge off-peak, or by a certain time in the morning etc .. you have to have delayed charging ON in order to delay until the time the other settings you chose are in effect.
Of course if you plug in during the "off peak" or whatever settings you chose, then of course the charging would be immediate.

The settings are complicated, but IMO only so to give people as many options to suit their charging desires as possible.

It has to be fairly robust to handle 3 and 4 period TOU schedules as well as seasonal changes which it does very well. I did spend a bit of effort setting it up nearly 3 years ago and haven’t had to touch it since.

Fortunately, I don’t need to worry about timing my charging, but talk about an example of where Tesla is light years ahead.

The most obvious capability missing from the charging screen on my 23 EUV is a simple setting to tell it when I want it to START charging. I would always have it start at 9:01pm, when my rate goes down.

I would like to hope that the computer and software in the Bolt is capable of being updating to add minor features like this, which leaves two possibilities:

— GM doesn’t want to devote the time and money to make changes like this.

— The hardware / software isn’t capable.

As much as I would love updates to be free, I would pay $99 for an annual update if it brought lots of enhancements etc. (Not a required annual subscription, just a one-time charge you could opt in to; choose to wait a year and get two years worth of updates for $99, etc)

I know many people would not want to pay, but if the enhancements were super worthwhile, and this path was the only way to get GM to exert the expense and effort…

It does that under Utility Rate Charging section. Your off peak should be set for 9PM and it will start at that time.

I just went thru setting up charging on my '23 Bolt EUV and to answer your question as best I can .. the utility rate charging is part of delayed charging .. in other words .. based on your settings "delay" the charging to use off peak hours as best as possible based on that setting (you have off peak only). At least that's my take on it.

And yes all this delayed charging is complicated I guess to make it as flexible as possible?

Here's my delimma .. I am retired so a lot of days I don't have a specific hour I need the car charged by, so I wish there was some way to indicate that so that the car could charge off peak .. stop charging during peak for a day when I don't have a set time .. then resume charging off peak again.

Another anomaly. My off peak is 11PM to 7AM. But apparently you can't set a time period that goes across midnight. So I have to have 2 periods for off peak:
12am-7am
11pm-12am

I currently have it set to use all peaks, but once I get my L2 port installed this Friday, then plan to try to use Off Peak Only and see how that goes.

Presume it doesn't matter to the batteries long term if I charge L2 primarily vs L1 ?

I would probably have to go out and look in the car again but there is a way...I just forget.
When I initially set up my EUV that is what I did...off peak charging only and it would always start at 7PM for me.
I later added a departure time of 4:30AM based on forum advice and now it charges off peak only and starts charging so it will be finished by 4:30AM if that makes sense.
Seems to me there was a second step I had to make to get the departure time and that was separate from setting up the off peak charging.

I use both TOU charging schedules and departure time charging.
The TOU schedule tells the car what time periods are better to charge based on price and the departure time charging tells the car what time you want it fully charged by.
In my case...off peak is 7PM to 7AM and I want the car ready at 4AM since the days I work out of town I leave around 5ish.
It has been while since I set that up and probably have to go back out to the car and take a look at it now....If my memory is any good then I think you have to first select delayed charging and then you can set a TOU schedule to follow. Otherwise when you deselect delayed charging then it doesn't need a schedule since it will just charge anytime you plug in.

Welcome. I too can't help and wouldn't even be able to help w/earlier Bolts ('17 to '21).

To me, the charging timer UI on Bolt is really complicated vs. what I had on my former two former '13 Leaf SV. I almost never used Bolt's timer/delayed charging UI since I almost never charged at home anyway.

Fortunately I don’t need to worry about timing my charging, but on my 2015 Leaf S, setting the timer is ridiculously complicated. Much simpler on the SV.
