You are so right. And, the moment you sign the papers you owe more than the value of the car. Taxes, doc fees, dealer markup, etc. drive up the cost without increasing the value.

I too am buying a 2012 Miata PRHT from a friend for a good deal and on my first attempt to sell my 2019 Premier, I couldn't sell it for 15,500! I'll try again soon but when the dealer offers 12k, you know they have dropped.

I was looking at used before I lucked out and someone cancelled their order and I got it, but used dealers weren’t ready to drop their prices at the time.
I bet some of them wind up upside down on their inventory
