This tutorial will list step by step instruction on how to install DIY LED Illuminated charge port for $20 or less. Upon finish this process, you will have LED that will flash/blink according to the car onboard LED.

1- Purchase 12V LED strip (color of your choice)
Image

2- You will need 2 pin, something like below or you can make one on your own (which I did as I don't have it ready during the install)

Or you can get it from Amazon

3- Unscrew 3 bolts (green mark) then remove the battery top holder (metal bar). open the red (positive) tab and unscrew the positive terminal.

4- Take off the battery.
5- Pull this up so you can have room to access X106 connector

6- Open the X106 lock to separate male/female connector
Image

7- Open the outer cover to access the wires (there are 4 locks: 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom)

8- Here is the X106 connector PIN layout

9- Use paper clip to remove this 2 rubber cover (pin 6 & 7)

10- Insert the black wire (negative) from LED to pin6 and Red wire (positive) to pin 7 so the pin will looks like this:

11- Use zip tied to secure the wire and hot glue (optional) to cover the wire hole
Image

12- Reassemble the X106 connect back to it original position and put back the battery and battery holder

13- Cut off the LED strip to the size of the Charge port then solder the wire to negative (-) and positive (+)

14- insert the LED strip to the charge port holder (I use the silicon that I have lay around and apply it to the bottom of the LED strip before insert to the charge port, for more secure)

15- make sure to use silicon to cover all the both end of the LED strip.

16- Fish the LED wiring cable from the charge port to the front of the trunk (use a piece of thin wire for easy to fish)

17- Connect the wire from X106 connector to the LED wire.

If you do everything right, when you open the door then the LED will light up. Once you plug in the charger then the LED will blink according to the car computer as it will sync to the LED on the dashboard.

Below is the link to the finish video (sorry, I don’t know how to post the video in this forum)

This is pretty awesome!

Did you have to drill a hole for the wire? I don't see an obvious place for it to snake through the charge port.

Does anyone have the details on the size of the male pin that would be inserted into the connector? I'm happy to pick up the linked set on Amazon but just as happy to only source a few male terminals if I can find the correct pitch width.

I get it but I think the "crack heads" are way more likely to cut the cable and run. 40 lbs. of copper can net you a couple hundred bucks, same as the phone in your car. You can get the cables and be out with no risk or you can battle a window and take more time and a much higher risk of getting caught.

More likely they're "smack heads" and it's about ease of use over maximizing return on labor. Take the bike stealing industry in NY, doesn't matter if they steal a $500 or a $10,000 bike, it's getting sold for the same exact price, like $20, because they're just not interested in parting out your bike. They just want to get high for the night.

The real secret you learn if you live in a place with high crime is to just leave your cars unlocked and your windows down for short errands like charging. In Brooklyn the worst that would happen is every once and awhile you'd wake up to find someone homeless sleeping in your car but you've prevented a couple of smashes of your window.

It's all about the quickest score and I think that's the chargers themselves right now.

For anyone interested in the details of fishing the wire from the charge port to the engine bay, there's a lengthy video explanation of the process on Youtube. You basically go behind the rubber gasket in the charge port with a wire/coat hanger and snake it fwd to the hood area.

Note, the Youtube video uses different pins on the wiring harness than the OP here. Sounds like @key did this on a 2022, previous model years may want to reference the video above if their connector looks different. Would love to get my hands on a wiring diagram to be sure before I start pulling things apart.

Also it looks like the connector pins are ~1.5mm, if the measurements on similar harness kits on AliExpress are to be believed.

So I painstakingly followed these instructions here combined with the ones from the video for my 2017 Premier and I get no power to the wires and therefore no light. I tested the wires+led with a 9v battery prior to install and also pulled the led off the soldering to see if it was damaged and it still worked. I then pulled everything apart to make sure the pins were seated correctly and they are. Anybody have any suggestions? I read somewhere that a software update may be necessary?

awww yis. Thanks for the guide!!! The LED strip worked perfectly on my 2019.
The LEDs light up when you open the door on the 2017-2021 as well.
I really missed the light-up charge port my BMW i3 had.

The pins don't really "snap" into place in the connector, so you'll need to secure the wires via zip ties or electrical tape to keep them from sliding out. I positioned the LED strip "split" at the very top of the socket so it was less noticeable.

Thanks for this (older) thread. I just added blue LEDs to our new 2023 EUV (had the car less than a week). I found a 4-pack of LED HALO strips from Amazon. Wire attached that's long enough for the mod. They make more of a U than an O in the charge port but that' okay. Worked great. I just pushed the wire up around the gasket. The LED strip fits tight around the inside rim so I didn't even have to use the sticky back.

Thanks for the share. I've been meaning to search for a shorter strip but haven't gotten around to it. Your research and post will save me a bunch of time.

Update for everyone - After a few days I decided the LED strip I picked was just too bright. I like the color and I like the pre-connected wires. I also like how the strip just fits nice and tight into the groove. Super easy to install. I just find it blinding if it wraps all around the plug.
To make it a little easier on the eyes I just pulled it out of the groove. And while the LED was off (not lit!) I simply snipped off about 3/4 of it on the printed cut line with a pair of scissors and tucked it back in the top side of the groove. Still not peeling off the sticky tape.
Now the light is still plenty bright, and I think works best in a darker garage or outside. Won't blind you.

Here's what's left over from the LED strip...
I pulled the cap off of the removed strip and stuck it on the end of the side left connected in the car.
