Anyone know how the system requiring eye contact will work for people wearing glasses (sun glasses??)?

I believe it probably uses infrared. I don't like being monitored by machines in that manner. I'm a professional space and sci-fi artist and designer, and I couldn't wait for it all to get here when I was a kid, but now, no thanks. I've never used the voice stuff on my computers or phones, I refuse to speak to an Alexis, even though I did have the Enterprise's computer on my want list.

Sadly, I don't think it matters whether you're using voice commands anymore. I know for a fact that my mic is always live, as things that I've mentioned in passing conversations popped up as the first option in a Google search more times than I can count.

 

There's a 1995 tv movie called "The Colony" where there is a terrible secret in the expensive, high security gated community the story takes place in. The terrible secret? Camera and mics in the homes!!!

 

Given that the upcoming Bolt EUV and refreshed Bolt EV will have Super Cruise as an option, I thought this would be a nice demo of the capabilities. A couple of takeaways from the video:

• Super Cruise won't shift lanes for you, but you can shift lanes without disengaging the system. It might be nice for GM to improve this by providing automatic lane shifting when the blinker is engaged.
• Super Cruise is currently a $5,000 option, but hopefully it will come down a bit in price for the Bolt EV and EUV. It does appear to require Adaptive Cruise Control, so hopefully that's available (maybe a standard feature?) on the Bolt EV and EUV.

Do we know what the 3 pink/red lights on the 2 sides of the main green bar light represent?
I noticed they were flashing often. Is that just recognizing the car is working to stay centered in the lane or is it something else it wants the driver to be aware of that it is doing?

I pulled up the 2020 manual. lots of warning pages where Super Cruise is described 👩‍⚖️

It doesnt mention anything about those little lights; After reviewing the video, those may not be visible to the naked eye, even though they are showing on the camera view. May be IR illumination for the face, so the sensors work no matter how much light is on the drivers face?
And/Or the eyes. So they "light up" for the sensors on the steering column 👀

Yes, I couldn't find anything in the manual, either. I also noticed all those warnings!

One thing that I thought was interesting is that it called out that Super Cruise wouldn't react to cars in other lanes. I think that's interesting as a warning, especially because it was one of the things aggravates me the most about adaptive cruise control (phantom braking).

 

The Cadillac website says that after three years you need to purchase an OnStar package to continue to use supercruise. Does anyone know if this is true? This would dampen my enthusiasm in the extreme.

 

It seems like $5,000 should pay for a lot of OnStar...

Maybe in 5-7 years I can find a used one.
I'd love to saunter into a Caddy dealer and convince them I am someone looking to buy a CT6 with Super Cruise, just to play with this New Tech.

I'm into all things bicycles. I have friends talking about converting to a single speed.... I tell them "I don't get it. I like technology!".

 

I will be alone in saying this, but I thought it quite irresponsible of him to be driving 82 mph in what is clearly a 70 MPH zone. {And, before initiating Super Cruise, he tailgated tremendously!} He was making no allowances for someone in the right lane, who is driving the speed limit, deciding to pass the semi in front of him without his barreling up their tailpipe. Are speed limits set for only those who do not have autonomous driving capability? I know it is not speed, per se, that causes accidents, but rather the speed differences between the participants. Still, if we all hover at the limit, instead of all speeds from the SL-3 to the SL+12, would it not be safer for all of us?

 

Yes, I didn't want to detract from the Super Cruise demo, but yeah, that was a bit of small pp video flexing.

 

I'm a bit disappointed with SC so far in that it only works on freeways. SC could be a great safety benefit for those at risk for falling asleep while driving, such as night shift workers, or those with medical conditions that might cause them to lose control, or the elderly where autonomous driving could bring more mobility, or anyone on a long trip that should have stopped to rest but didn't (other people, not me). But unless you are on a freeway, it won't help. Perhaps in time ... For now, I'd be happy with adaptive cruise control.

 

Chevy is going stage by stage developing autonomous systems instead of using the people who buy their cars as beta testers of their autonomous technology, so they will be slower to develop than certain other companies. Chevy could "turn loose" their system on an unsuspecting public, but they are taking a more cautious / responsible route.

PS: I am not being a hypocrite when I say that yes, if I had a Tesla I would use autopilot in an irresponsible fashion, just like everyone else who uses autopilot. Nobody who has a Tesla YouTube channel keeps their hands on the wheel, they just reach up and wiggle the wheel when they get a warning that they are supposed to have their hands on the wheel... I would drive the same way, but I would do it in an informed state of mind, knowing that I am acting as a beta tester for unproven tech.
