Hi, I've never owned a car before so this is my first time needing to buy winter tires. My parents always have a second set of wheels for their winter tires, and I'm thinking with the TPMS needing to be re-valved on every swap it would make sense for me to also have a second set of wheels for winter tires. I realize I'm probably getting to this later than I should be; but for an absolute noob, what's a reasonable price for wheels (and/or tires)? Can somebody recommend a basic set? Most of the discussion in this thread is way beyond my comfort/knowledge level.
I know the default is 17" and I'm hesitant to try different sizes.

LadyNigelia - a second set of wheels is a great way to go. You can run with or without TPMS. I run without, to save cost.

Many people go -1 on size to give more sidewall to handle rough winter roads. Helps with the ride and smaller tires are generally cheaper than larger.

I went with a very economical (for new) setup with the wheels at $102 each and tires (Blizzak) on discount for a total of $738 shipped to my house. Many times you can get rebates for tires this time of year.

I spend a LOT of time dealing with winter tires and wheels as I have them on 4 of my cars.

Thank you so much!

I found a set of wheels + nokian studded snow tires on FB Marketplace, but the wheels came off a 2015 Sonata which have a 5x115mm bolt pattern. The internet says the Bolt has a 5x105mm bolt pattern. I assumed that wasn't one of the dimensions that had flexibility. Is that correct or can I buy the set? It's listed for $600, tires used minimally during one season.

Two problems I see: 1) Most states do not allow studded tires. 2) The bolt pattern MUST be 5-105.

What size are those Sonata wheels?

What AGE are the tires? There is a DOT stamp on the side of them that states the week and year they were made. You don't want to buy anything (even with tread left) much older than about 5 years.

These measurements have to be exact. The number 5 is the number of bolts holding the wheel on and the 105 mm is the distance between the bolts. It can't off at all or the wheels will not fit. There is also a third measurement called an offset which determines how in or out the tire sits in comparison with the hub that that wheel is bolted to. Sorry to say but the Sonata wheels will not fit our Bolts. You might try calling junk yards aka automobile recylers in that they have a variety of cheaper wheels and can try them on your car relatively easily. Facebook Marketplace can also be a good place to find things. However, the best for Bolt specific things is likely to be this forum.

1) I do most of my driving in VT/NH and neither state has a restriction on studs, but that's a good point to raise.
2) The internet says the Sonata wheels are "Size: 17" x 7", 5 Lug, 115mm Bolt Pattern" the seller says the tires are "215/55 R17" and that she got them "last winter"

Thank you for confirming that the Sonata wheels don't work for my 2020 Bolt LT.

I will restart my shopping, now that you've recommended getting the 16" wheels with more sidewall for cushion. What's the proper size tire for at 16" wheel?

Hi. Are you aware that I have the perfect wheels for you? I am desperate to sell them. I just lowered the price to $325. (4) 16x6.5 5x105 56.6mm hub RTX wheels. These wheels are exact bolt pattern, rim width, and hub fit for Bolt. They are 16" inch instead of 17" which is ideal for a taller profile winter tire. All (4) wheels for $325.

How thick are your adapters? You went from 5x105 to 5x114.3? Would you mind posting a pic parallel to the side to show how much they stick out, if at all?

It seems like maybe this is your final fitment? https://www.willtheyfit.com/index.p...th=6.5&offset=44&width2=235&aspect2=40&wheel_size=18&wheel_width=7-5&offset2=25
(This is taking the 50mm offset of the Volk wheels and subtracting 25mm for the adapters, assuming they're 1" thick)

Just got some Fastwheels FC04s. 17x8 et45 with 235/45r17 General G-Max RS tires. This combo comes in at 39.4 lbs, 6.7 lbs lighter than OEM.

WARNING: this is an extremely close fit and does require a small spacer. With no spacer the tire just touches the strut, so I machined some 2mm spacers and now have exactly 2mm clearance to the strut. With a 225 or OEM 215 width tire everything should clear just fine with no spacers. Also, different brands and models have different section widths for the same size so some 235s may be fine, others marginal (like the G-Max RS) and others will definitely rub (Hankook RS4).

So it looks like these are your final measurements (not including your 2mm spacers). The inside of the wheels/tires come in closer than stock by 20.1mm which is a lot, so it makes sense why you almost hit the suspension. Good to know how close you can get and still fit, though!

Thanks for posting these, I feel like I can use this as a benchmark for how to fit many other wheels now.

I'm planning to run some 18x8 wheels at +35mm offset, which will end up looking like this:

32252

[willtheyfit.com wheel fitment calculator]

My only concern, though is that the wheels poke out a little over an inch. Measuring the rears, there is about 1.2 inches from the outside of the wheel to the outside of the fender, so it should be OK, but in the front there is a little less than an inch. So the fronts will stick out by maybe a 1/4" or so, which is not terrible, but I would prefer them to be more flush or even a bit tucked, if I decide to drop my ride.

Ideally I'd be able to get 18x7.5 in the front and 18x8 in the rear, but it's hard to get staggered sets unless you're buying $3000-$4000 wheels. Not yet ready to drop that much money on vanity...

I don't want to post pictures of the rims just yet, though, I'd like them to be a surprise! (And save myself embarrassment if they don't end up fitting well. let me be the guinea pig)
